High Chairs are great for feeding babies and an essential item of baby equipment in most modern homes. Highchairs come in a variety of styles and prices from basic compact folding models to feature rich high low chairs to traditional wooden highchairs that suit a more classic home or country kitchen. There are a few very modern high chairs from Scandinavian brands that appeal to the design oriented parents with their modern designer kitchens.
Most high chair brands are suitable from 6 months onwards or when your child is able to sit up unaided; there are a few exceptions to this rule, if the backrest of the baby highchair can be recline sufficiently then it could be suitable from 3 months or even from birth as is the case with the Chicco Polly Magic.
There are many baby high chairs on the market, so to help understand some of the key features of the product we have provided a small list.
- Backrest recline – some basic highchairs will have a fixed back rest. The more deluxe high chairs will have multiple recline positions to allow baby to nap. This will also affect the minimum suitable age the child can be before the highchair can be used.
- Adjustable leg/calf support – This will offer greater comfort when the backrest is reclined.
- 5 point harness – For safety a five point harness is recommended to ensure baby doesn't slide through the harness. Some traditional wooden high chairs may not use a full 5 point harness, but may use a crutch support.
- Height adjustable – This feature is becoming more common on mid to higher price highchairs. The height adjustment allows you to fine-tune the height to your kitchen table it also offers the flexibility to feed your baby while you are sat in a chair or sitting on the floor.
- Removable tray – A removable tray offer many benefits from making it easier to get your child in and out of the highchair to offering more space and comfort as your child grows. A removable tray also gives you the option, as you child gets older, of bringing the highchair to the table so your child can eat with the family at the table. A feature very common on Scandinavian highchairs such as Svan.
- Simple Folding – A simple folding mechanism is a real benefit for busy parents. Many modern highchairs have simple two step folding mechanisms that allow the high chair to collapse down to a compact size for easy storage.
